Rare Fish | More Photos by Koji Wada, Centropyge narcosis, Apolemichthys kingii, Holacanthus limbaughi

Koji Wada recently shared these older photos, some which show the rarest of the rare in aquariums. Up first is what is likely one of the few aquarium photos of Centropyge narcosis! This fish is a deep water rarity from the Cook Islands, also home of The Peppermint Angel, Paracentropyge boylei. With Boyle’s group collecting again maybe another will pop up? We shall see this is what I consider the least known angelfish among aquarists. At right is one of the original holotype specimens. Photo by Jack Randal.

Here is the rare and beautiful Apolemichthys kingii! These hail from African waters and rarely leave the area. Discovered and named after Dennis King, an avid underwater photographer, identification specialist, and author of Reef Fishes and Corals, East Coast of Southern Africa.

Lastly we have Holacanthus limbaughi, The Clipperton Angelfish. These have similar story to their cousins Holacanthus clarionensis. Only not as common in the wild and due to the remote location (and other implications…) rarely collected. H. limbaughi is only found at Clipperton Island. This beautiful fish can be seen on display at the Waikiki Aquarium. I was informed by Jake Adams that the Waikiki’s fish passed away after 10 years of being on display. If you’d like to see one in person, I believe the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach California still has one on display.

Thank You to Koji Wada of Blue Harbor for these images.
