Gel based foods are terrific for the fish we love to keep. They lock in vitamins and nutrients that can otherwise be lost when entering water. The main issue is the gel can be too tough or too messy. Most users rub the food between their thumb and index finger in the aquarium creating many small particles that go uneaten. Ocean Nutrition, makers of the well known Formula 1 & 2, have answered this problem by creating a new twist on these popular gel foods.

As Reef Builders has made us aware, the new RDF line (Rapid Delivery Formulation) is nearly identical to the original gel based Formulas, except when melted the RDF food separates into small gel based pellets for easier feeding. Here’s a video clip showing the pellet separation.

An interesting inclusion in the ingredients is Paprika. (Absent in the original Formula 1.) Besides it’s natural smell Paprika is a natural source of Choline. A full ingredient list below:

Kril, Plankton, gel binder, shrimp, spinach, clams, kelp, fish hydrolysate, tuna eggs, fish meal, squid, lecithin, vitamins (choline chloride, ascorbic acid including stabilized vitamin C, vitamin E supplement, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, calcium pantothnate, riboflavin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, vitamin A acetate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B-12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, biotin), paprika, cantaxanthin, fish oil, trace elements (manganese sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, sodium selenite) and astaxanthine.
