Mounting with Magnets and Wire Clean Up

There is one thing we hate more than algae, and that would be wires. Loose wires hanging outside the tank and around the sump can not only be distracting, but dangerous as well.

With all the different controllers we have today one of the biggest hurdles is mounting them properly so that you can access them and cleanly organize the wires going to and from. Our friend Mike (Mcliffy2) came up with a simple and effective mounting solution to make organizing your reef area even easier–magnets.

     RKE Magnets

Yes, that’s the new ReefKeeper Elite controller. We’ll have some user info on it soon… back to the magnets. These peel and stick magnets means no drilling, and easy removal. When the unit is attached you cant tell a difference. Mike has also used these to mount his Vortech MP40 Drivers and RKE Strip.

Make sure you use “High Energy” magnets, many others will not be strong enough to support the weight. These are the actual magnets Mike used for his mounting.

If you’re a bit hesitant to use magnets near expensive electrical devices another great option is 3M Dual Lock Velcro. This is often used for EZ-Pass attachment to cars and is available in black and clear.

Now that the mounting problem is solved it’s time to deal with the wires. Zipties are hard to beat. As you probably know you can pick them up at Home Depot for a few dollars. Here’s Mike’s neat and tidy controller area using the peel and stick magnets and zip ties.

If you’re like us and clean your pumps often, cutting and reapplying zip ties can be a real hassle. For those cords and wires, look into black twist ties. Various hobby stores like Hobby Lobby sell them in hundreds for a dollar or two.

If you want to get really into it, check out Home Theatre stores and Cable websites for looms, wraps, cable clips and the like. We came across CableOrganizer.com which has some stuff we never even new existed.

speaking of magnets, they can also be used to keep the skin of your stand attached to your stand.

i’m going to use rare earth magnets to skin my steel stand. this will allow me easy access to every side of the stand, without the need for doors. it also let’s you experiment with different skin types (plywood, glass, acrylic, etc) i’m torn between using matte black wood or black translucent acrylic for my skin.

this gives me the function i need and the form i want. (making the stand have a sealed-in look with no trim or grooves)

      Hi Keith,

Good call on the magnetic skin. Be sure to put up photos of the finished product.
