MACNA XX | Aquarium Specialty

Scott, owner of Aquarium Specialty had what I thought was the best dry good vendor booth at MACNA. They hauled out everything from Bubble King to IceCap. Scott, owner of Aquarium Specialty had what I thought was the best dry good vendor booth at MACNA. They hauled out everything from Bubble King to IceCap. They did lose a few corals on the trip to Atlanta, but the variety of equipment they had available for sale made up for it. My friend Mike, picked up a Vortech MP40 from them at an unbeatable price.

Aquarium Specialty also had a wide variety of Korallen Zucht products, including Zeovit, the Revolution skimmer and their new Zeovit Reactors.

Royal Exclusiv’s new RD2 had plenty of people talking. The controller is quite massive, but the build quality of both that and the pump are top notch.

The new Supermarin 300 also got plenty of looks. It is quite large, and given the dual pump design, requires a large sump to call home. The machined volutes and parts are in a class all their own.

The new BK Mini’s made an appearance, showing off their new volute for increased air draw and improved performance.

As some of you may know, Scott offers some great acrylic work. Not happy with the construction of the auto Zeo Reactors available he created his own. It follows the design of most standard reactors, but includes a high power air pump to agitate the stones and release the biofilms, also knowns as mulm. In order to direct the air up and through the bubble plate to the stones there is a small collar to direct the air. This way no air is allowed to escape and go up the sides around the stones. Kudos to Scott for the nice design.

They also had a new Zeo Reactor from Vertex Aquaristik. Usually the use of a “k” instead of a “c” means a German company. In this case it’s just Proline Aquatics being tricky. Vertex is their latest venture. We saw the boxes to the right and asked Scott to open it up so we could get a peek at their new skimmer as well.

What’s interesting is the bubble plate look like work from Honya, the manufacturer of Octopus. But the neck is identical to Euro-Reef, which are made in the East as well.

Then you have the skimmer pump which is a Resun… an odd mix.

The body itself looks okay: The neck securely sits on the body with no twisting or locking mechanism. It has a bubble plate and the transition is fairly gradual. However, negative points for a Resun pump and a klosed closed bubble plate.
