I got a chance last week to play with ATB’s Airstar powered Large Cone Skimmer. This thing is a serious performer. My favorite part of this Austrian crafted skimmer is the pump. The Laguna based Airstar draws in an immense amount of air and is whisper quiet.  The photo above shows the skimmers reaction after adding a little bit of skimmate from one of Doug Lehman’s beautiful soft coral reefs.

Doug is the former Chicago Marine Aquarium Society President, and is known as the resident go-to acrylic guy in the Chicago area. Doug made the 1/2″ acrylic sump to house the skimmer shown above for Mike, known as mcliffy2 across the forums.

Based on my brief experience with the skimmer the only criticism I can give are cosmetic. I would like to see cast acrylic and a revert back to the original white color scheme.

I must admit I have some skimmer envy. The laguna motor also looks to have sealed the deal for a new return pump on the glassbox...

  • Nick,
Just a plain Laguna 900, no need for more flow or an enlarged volute for a return.

    Stun,
ATB red is.... no comment ;) Joking, but I really prefer the white.
