The Vortech MP40w is EcoTech’s most powerful and advanced product to date. Using magnetic coupling clamps the motor is able to transmit motion through the glass of your aquarium. This means no drilling, no wires in the tank, and no heat added directly to the water via the motor.

Unlike the MP20, the MP40w has a built in Wireless Wave Driver allowing it to communicate to other MP40w pumps wirelessly. When multiple MP40ws are used the aquarist can choose to operate in Sync or Anti-Sync slave modes. Meaning, with one pump being the Master, the others will either follow the same flow pattern or the opposite. This allows unique wave harmonics and flow patterns.

Here’s a video by EcoTech Marine showing how to create a wave with the MP40w. Multiple MP40ws can be used to increase the effect, as this video from MACNA XX shows.

In addition to the popular Short Pulse mode, both the MP40w and MP20 have two unique modes, Reef Crest and Lagoon. Below is a graph showing the flow patterns of these two. Click to enlarge.

Since the original product several changes have been made, with the latest offered in the MP40w. The physical improvements include:

    • New plastic encapsulated magnet
    • New high performance plastic drive shaft screw
    • Revised Wet Frame

In addition to these changes in hardware, new operational modes have been added:

    • Long Pulse Mode – Wave pulse timings of 2-60 seconds
    • New Night Mode – Full power for 14hrs at day and 10hrs at night
    • Pump Disconnect – If magnets separate, the pump shuts off
    • Feed Mode – Decreased from 1000gph to 500gph
    • Easier tuning of Short Pulse Mode for wave creation
    • More sporadic Reef Crest & Lagoon Mode

An older Vortech MP40w can be reflashed to have the new operational modes and the new hardware can be purchased for $9.45+shipping. [Full information on changes from InterZoo] [Full instructions for upgrade]

In my opinion this is the most advanced and elegant pump to date. For rimless aquarium owners, I cannot emphasize the difference this pump makes aesthetically. No wires is a good thing. In addition to the small size and great looks, the flow patterns are terrific. There is not a stream pump I have used, that has created an undertow like the Vortech.

EcoTech Marine is a dynamic growing company that brings a level of professionalism rarely seen in the industry. I am happy to say that one lucky glassbox-design.com reader will win a Vortech MP40w as part of our OKTOBERFEST Reader Giveaway. While I have not yet used the MP40w myself, the MP20 has greatly exceeded our expectations and we’re excited to offer this great pump.

Be sure to check out EcoTech’s full line including the MP20 and Battery Back Up.

I’ve been pleased with my mp20 so far, I actually want to upgrade it to the mp40w and another :D

my main problem with the vortech pumps, is that they do not have standard 1-10v control.

requiring use of a separate control unit instead of being able to use a single aquarium controller is a turn off.

    • MR294

I agree Keith, not being able to control it with my profilux is one of my only real complaints.

    • GSMguy

honestly if using an aquasurf or profilux means that the warranty is voided I don’t see the appeal

This has been talked about a lot lately, particularly with GHL asking for features to include in the Profilux 3. I am sure EcoTech will make the right decision for them and ultimately their customers. They’re a smart group of guys, and if they haven’t done it I am sure they have their reasons.

In the mean time I know Keith and a few others can code their ways to Profilux freedom ;)

      Hi eric michael,
would you mind uploading a video of MP20/MP40 in Lagoon and Reef Crest mode please?

    • http://glassbox-design.com eric michael

      Hi Cooking Momma,

Welcome to the site. I will try, but to be honest it will be very difficult to capture the MP20 movements in our 90g. Perhaps an MP40 would be more effective with the stronger flow… but because the flow pattern is so broad it really is difficult to capture the pattern in a fully stocked aquarium.

A demo tank with plastic beads in the water makes it much easier to see! I’ll give it a shot this weekend and see how it turns out.

I bought recently one Ecotech Marine Vortech mp40w… the “Reef Crest Random Mode” is great, like the empty space I’ve now compared with former pump Tunze Stream 6100.

      No wires into my tank…

Everything is great but… how many noise! It’s very disturbing. The stream was noiseless.

If you want I’ve taken two shots to show with or without vortech in my tank, you need to roll your mouse over my photo here: http://www.danireef.com/2008/10/10/ecotech-marine-vortech-mp40w-with-or-without-you/ the difference between two pumps is incredible.

Too bad that we’ve had to replace at least half in our store. Stay away from it if you value a reliable product.

      Sean,

I must my experience is much different. Some have had problems, but EcoTech always stands by their product. IMO, along with Dr. F&S they have the best customer support around. If you have not yet, I strongly suggest contacting EcoTech directly.

      Guys,
i have just taken delivery of 2 x mp40w pumps and have to say they are just brilliant. Only problem is i cant get them to synch in together, all i get is flashing lights all the time and the pumps switching themselves off. Read the instructions time after time and even found a pdf help file on the net, no matter what i just cant get one to become the master and the other slave.

Do you have any suggestions please ?
