ATB has been working on this HOB design for sometime. Our original post shows photos from the first prototype, but the revamped design shows significant construction changes. Most notably a solid acrylic cone body and small HOB “clamp”

Doing away with the older and larger HOB mount allows easier use as an in sump model. In addition to running in sump, it can be operated two different ways as a hang on the back, “HOB”. The pump can be placed in the aquarium, or outside.

By placing the pump outside the tank it frees up valuable real estate inside and lowers the heat transmission directly to the water. The small Askoll pump that is used won’t heat much, but it could be important for those utilizing Metal Halides over Nano Reefs. I’d also venture a guess that bubble size is smaller from less distance  traveled before entering the skimmer body.

As perviously mentioned, the body has no seams. It’s likely a cast acrylic mold and should make manufacturing these skimmers easier and less expensive.

Originally this skimmer has designed around the Hagen 702 power head with custom volute ala Jonathan Manke. Last I heard there were some issues they were having in Austria with this pump, and they are testing this smaller Askoll motor. Which pump will ultimately be used is still up in the air, but even with the Askoll the performance looks impressive. Here is the original prototype in action powered by the Askoll:

Wow, that is an interesting product for sure. Keeping the pump outside of the tank is a big plus aesthetically. I’ve been looking to replace my Coralife 65 for just that reason.

Any additional information on what size tank its intended for? Also the prototype photos show it sitting on a shelf next to the tank, I assume the final model would actually be able to execute on the “hang” part of a hang on back skimmer.

The updated design looks great! The new hanging method is a much more elegant solution than the giant acrylic tray, and the machined logo and rubber stop to rest against the glass are nice touches. My only (minor) complaint, I would’ve preferred white or all gray to the gray/red combo. Overall, this one looks like it was worth the wait, nicely done Anton.

I am not sure what size tank it will be rated for with the pump situation still up in the air. I would estimate up to 70 gallons. It’s my understanding that the shelf has been eliminated. The new model will be able to hang on the back, via the red mount. See this photo in full size:

It looks, by changing the body construction and eliminating the seam it can take the weight and stress by this single attachment.

      Hi Brandon,

Couldn’t agree more. I am not much of a fan of the red color combo and prefer the white or gray. I am hoping they can get the AC70 working. The early photos of the volute looking nice.

The red is a total bummer. I still have my eye on it, but since my sump is visible, the white would look so much nicer. There were a couple new shots in ATB’s RC forum today, skimmer running on the eheim

That is some good input. Perhaps a black color scheme would be better suited for the HOB so it isnt as ‘visible’ as a HOB.

The motor has yet to be finalized. Dont be shocked to see the AC70/802 as its motor. I solved the startup problems (the impeller head cant be fixed to the magnet… needs to spin 270 degrees at startup). If there is any problem with the pump it is that its making too much air… remember the first ones I did as a crude DIY for 400-450lph?

Well.. take that times 2 for what the pump makes now (and for a meager 10-15 watts). Thats some sort of lph/wattage record I’m sure. Freaky pump. So we just have to ‘tone it down’ a little. Heck, that AC70 could run the old ‘nano’.
