I have only experimented with Seachem's Reef Plus, which contains a large amount of trace elements and some Amino Acids. I've even in the past tried Mark Weiss products. I didn't try them for a few weeks, but a few months. Can't really say it's made an impact. I do however understand how Amino's help the uptake of nutrients when they're available. Even human body builders use sources of AA to help their body take up proteins better.

I haven't seen a huge change.

But what has attributed to a boost in my SPS color and PE was having elevated Ca, Mg, KH, feeding regularly. I definitely don't skim heavily. I do a 10% waterchange every 2 weeks. I don't use any other additives or trace elements. I am definitely happy with my colors and growth.

I've got to a point where I'm happy with how things are in my reef tank. I will however from time to time try some new products or techniques.

It's a growing and experimental hobby and being open to changes in the hobby is important.

Imagine if we never went any further than Undergravel Filters :)

great post :)

Hi Matt,

There are quite a few studies showing the direct uptake of amino's by SPS and by bacteria. I'll have to dig around, but there are even uptake difference in dark versus light (pretty cool). I feel the larger benefit is in the utilization of the bacteria, rather than the direct uptake of the coral. In the case that that the coral does have direct uptake amino's, the study we quoted shows an increase in growth and effect on coloration.

But I do agree, there are a very small group of individuals that would benefit from Amino's and have either a Normal (e.g. Berlin) system that are N limited, or a bac driven system such as prodibio.

We appreciate your comment, it's always nice to hear different perspectives.

I think the challenge is the definition of 'work', I don't have the paper in front of me, but there is one (a referral of mesocosm) that specifically shows that sps can take up amino acids. But how does that 'work'?!? My .02 cents, aminos are a waste of money UNLESS you have a very N limited environment. If you bleach your corals due to changing the bulbs out, will aminos 'work', NO! I think there's a bit too much hype surrounding these, and room for a bit more logic....

[...] Fuel is described as a “comprehensive carbohydrate, vitamin, amino acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid and trace element supplement developed to address nutritional requirements commonly associated with corals.” Perhaps a relabled Reef Plus, but it caught our eye and may be useful for those looking for an inexpensive amino acid supplement, which we get into here.
